Short answer
A moisture wicking polo or plain athletic top, joggers or track pants with pockets, and non-marking court or training shoes. Add a quarter zip or a jacket for outdoor classes, a whistle, a watch and a water bottle. Some districts write role based exceptions into their staff codes for PE and other physical jobs, so check your policy for what is allowed on gym days and when you cover a classroom.

Questions people ask
Can PE teachers wear shorts?
Often yes for gym and outdoor classes, but it depends on the district. Some codes list shorts as unprofessional for staff in general and carve out PE; check yours.
What shoes do PE teachers need?
Non-marking court or training shoes for the gym floor, plus a second pair for fields or wet grass. Running shoes are fine for outdoor running units.
What is a gym teacher costume?
For a costume, people usually wear a track suit or polo, a whistle on a lanyard, a clipboard and a cap. For real PE teaching, this page covers the working wardrobe.
