Fig. 1 Dark jeans with no rips, a knit layer and clean sneakers: the jeans day outfit most policies allow.

Short answer

Dark jeans with no rips or fading, a spirit shirt or a neat top, a layer and clean sneakers or loafers. Districts that allow jeans often limit them to set days and ban tears. Mesquite ISD in Texas, for example, allows jeans on Fridays with a spirit or school shirt, and no tears, holes, distressing or excessive wear. If a formal meeting falls on a jeans day, dress up for it.

Questions people ask

Can teachers wear jeans?

Depends on the district. Some policies ban blue jeans for staff (Durand-Arkansaw School District in Wisconsin lists them with T-shirts and athletic clothing). Others allow them on Fridays, spirit days or work days. Mesquite ISD allows them on Fridays and lists exceptions such as staff development days and field trips.

What is a good outfit for a teacher on spirit day?

The school shirt, dark jeans or chinos, a cardigan or quarter zip in a school color, and clean sneakers. Mesquite ISD, for one, expects jeans on spirit days to be worn with a spirit or school shirt.

Can teachers wear leggings on casual days?

Check the policy. Where leggings are allowed, many codes require a top or dress that covers the backside, as Durand-Arkansaw School District specifies.
